Principles Which Need to be Taught

In the New England Primer, published in 1691, colonial school children learned to read through simple rhymes pointing back to Scripture:

In Adam's Fall
We Sinned all.

Thy Life to Mend
This Book Attend.

["This Book," of course, is the Bible.]
