Government and the English Language

ELVISNIXON recommends a variety of news resources and websites from time to time (thejimmyzshow.com , angrywhitedude.com , informingchristians.com , the millstone diaries ), and we wish to add to our honor roll Marshall Miller writing his From the Right column at the Dodge County News .

Thank you, Mr Miller, for pointing out that the withholding tax was a "temporary" tax dating back to 1943!

In the tradition of George Orwell's Politics and The English Language  and the work of Ambrose Bierce, we should publish a translation of government terms into their real meanings.  Federal once meant a dispersion of power, but it now means a concentration of power in Washington, DC.  The government often makes words mean the precise opposite of the original definition.

It also employs a version of the English language different from the citizenry.  To the government, a "temporary" or "emergency" tax always means "permanent and growing."  Actually, anything with the term "tax" is considered permanent by those in power.

Interestingly, the term "tax" has been replaced with "contributions," which has the connotation of optional and voluntary for the average person, but there is nothing optional about it in reality.

In light of the fact that the "temporary" tax of the Roosevelt Administration is still with us and being ruthlessly administered, (unlike our immigration laws) we may wonder why.

What do you think?

    Hi there,

Until we conservatives get as pushy with the knowledge that we have, the liberals are going to just keep walking all over us.

      VERY true.

Conservative,by nature, attempt to avoid rudeness. The Left views such concepts as "puritanical" and harbors no reservations about offending any who dare disagree.

Thanks for the kind words and the mention of my column (many papers won't run it) and the great "INS" construction site story. I'm no Elvis Nixon but who is? You write great stuff. All should read your description of the illegals scattering when they saw the three famous initials on the caps - funny and effective.
I tell everyone to read your site. Thanks again. By the way, I might be the only Georgian who has worked at the Houston Intercontinental Airport, since renamed for George Bush, five different times in the 1980s - it seems about five or ten years back ! Texas folks were great to me. I miss the people I worked with there.
