The flipside of Claude Chabrol's 'EYE OF VICHY' which presented the collaborationist French Governments' propaganda and whitewashing of genocide in service of the nazi regime. 'East Side Story' shows the mass murderer Stalin chortling heartily as peasants and workers do choreographed "dance" to glorify that bloody regime. East German films are featured as well as some heavy handed attempts by Czech /Russian and Bulgarians at coopting Hollywood "bourgeois" fantasies of the 1930's up to the early '70's- ( Hungarians were evidently too rebellious to create such tripe). Slave labor is portrayed as somehow humorous and one Russian commentator admits that during the period most people's fantasy was merely to stay alive. While much hand wringing is done over the difficulty of mixing joy and musical ephemera of Broadway/Hollywood with the Gulags and starving millions and millions to death in the name of "progressive politics" and a new "5 year plan" etc...there is lacking Claude Chabrol's pognant underlining of the verdict of history on these tyrants and killers. Highly recommended to any under the sway of "political correctness" or other marxist bigotry
